Junior High Students Compete in Math Contests
The 8th grade Algebra students competed in a national math contest in November. The AMC 8 (American Mathematics Contest) is a 25 question multiple choice test. The test covers a wide variety of math topics as well as logic and reasoning skills. Syracuse 8th graders have been participating in the contest for more than 20 years. This year’s school winner is Griffin Bokamper. Griffin’s name will be engraved on a plate and placed on a plaque in the middle school along with all of the previous winners.
The junior high also participated in the local MathCounts contest. MathCounts is a national organization promoting math and problem solving to middle school kids all over the United States. Each year Syracuse sponsors a local contest to select a team of individuals to move on to the SE Nebraska District competition. This year’s team of Colton Sprague, Hunter Holle, Kaden Knake and Tyler Sears represented Syracuse Middle School at the District Contest. Due to Covid 19, the test was taken online and there was not a team portion to the contest. Colton Sprague was the highest scoring individual for Syracuse and he will move to the next level of competition to be taken again online on February 25.
There were also 4 alternates that made the top 8 in Syracuse that competed individually: Cash Vollertson, Ayden Swift, Maxwell Parde, and Cy Petersen.
